Generally, this was as quiet as I have seen Barnetby for freights, just a few DB (EWS) and Freightliner 66s were seen over a 5 hour period. Sunday 1 March 2009: Another visit to Barnetby, on a wet January day. 66020 takes more coal empties east at 09:30 on 23rd Jan 2009 66206 heads east on a gloomy 23rd January 2009 at Barnetby. 66206 is hauling empty coal hoppers bound for Immingham docks. Working hard up the incline from Wrawby Junction is 66146. 66146 is in fairly filthy condition as it heads its rake of empty hoppers through Barnetby. Approaching Barnetby from Immingham is 66232 with loaded coal hoppers. Another EWS liveried 66 is 66159, again with empty coal hoppers. One passenger has disembarked for Manchester Airport-bound 185129, operated by First Trans-Pennine. East Midlands Trains Class 153, 153313 is bound for Grimsby, Another EWS Class 66, No.66035 passing the weedy platform ends at Barnetby. Pandrol-Jackson StoneBlower DR80201 still bears the name of former network operator Railtrack. DR80201 scoops up another load of ballast. DR80201 loading itself with ballast. Framed by the semaphores is Freightliner Heavy Haul's 66618. 66618 is named 'Railways Illustrated Annual Photographic Awards Alan Barnes'. Another Freightliner 'Fred', 66551. Now owned by DB, EWS liveried 66166 powers through Barnetby on 23rd Jan 2009. Freightliner Heavy Haul have 25 low-geared Class 66/6s, here is 66615. 66615 passing Barnetby with loaded oil tanks.

Arriva liveried 150245 heads towards STJ. FGW 158950 approaching Severn Tunnel Junction. 158950 passes a track gang. Two Arriva liveried 150s pass at Severn Tunnel Junction. 150245(L) is bound for Cheltenham, whilst 150255(R) is headed for Maesteg, Much work is being done a Severn Tunnel Junction, with new track and point sections being assembled to the left of the main lines in this shot. The new sidings will be to the right of the main lines, behind this FGW HST service headed by 43129. Record shot of MTU'd First Great Western HST power car 43129. An FGW class 158. FGW 15895 passes the former diesel depot building a Severn Tunnel Junction. 60024 had charge of the Murco tanks bound for Westerleigh. The Robeston-Westerleigh tanks has always been a Class 60 turn, 60024 seen here on 21st Jan 2009 passing an FGW HST at Severn Tunnel Junction. By February 2009 class 66s were being seen on this turn. 60024 was one of 20 60s slated for storage on the 28th Jan, one week after this shot was taken. It is now (Feb 2009) in store at St Blazey. Showing that not everything is gone forever, part of the work being undertaken at STJ is the reinstatement of the formerly closed platform in the background. This will re-open for stopping trains on the new main line towards the Severn Tunnel. Class 150, no 150233. 66570 was in charge of 4O51, 10:00 Wentloog (Cardiff) - Southampton Freightliner. 66041 is Eastbound with EWS coal hoppers. 66041 passing the former STJ depot on 21st Jan 2009. First-built production HST power car no 43002. Back in 1976 this power car entered service as W43002 paired with W43003 as Western Region HST set 253001. Almost 33 years later it is still going strong, albeit in rebuilt form with an MTU engine. Arriva Cross Country class 170 no.170101. Advenza Freight class 57 no 57005 powers out from the Severn Tunnel. Delivered as D1831 in May 1965 to D16 (Toton), this loco became 47350 before being rebuilt as 57005. Released to traffic in April 1999 it worked with Freightliner until January 2008 when it was bought by Cotswold Advenza. 57005 heads light engine towards Cardiff. Freightliner's 66585 pulls its train up the bank leading from the Severn Tunnel. 66585 is hauling loaded coal hoppers through STJ on 21st Jan 2009. Freightliner's 66585 carries the name 'The Drax Flyer'. A short Enterprise working behind EWS 66102. 67028 leads 2U14 11:02 Taunton-Cardiff. 67028 pauses at STJ. 67016 was bringing up the rear of 2U14, 67028 on the front. 67016 is now leading as the same 67s power 2C79, the 14:00 Cardiff-Taunton, 67028 is on the rear. A nice nostalgic touch is the regional marking on the coaches - here is M6064 which would have been a rare sight in Wales in the 70s/80s. 66192 powers its loaded coal train towards STJ. 6B86 13:00 Portbury - Aberthaw Power Station, behind 66192. 66083 headed 6V92, the 10:10 Corby-Margam. A DMU is seen at Leeds on 29th March 1980. It is carrying the fairly short-lived white/grey and blue livery that was applied to refurbished units. A view inside the National Railway Museum at York, 29th March 1980. Another view inside the NRM, including Mallard. The first of the East Coast Main Line HST sets, 254001 stands at York on 29th March 1980. The first built Deltic - 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' had less than 2 years left to run in British Rail service when seen at York on 29th March 1980. 47377 at Swindon, 3rd May 1980. Not yet 15 years old at this time, it was new to 41A (Tinsley) in September 1965. It ended its career in 2000 having latterly been operated by Freightliner, broken up in 2003 at Crewe Diesel Depot. 56044 was a Doncaster built example of the then new Class 56 heavy freight locomotives. Later named 'Cardiff Canton', 56044 was withdrawn by EWS in December 2000 and was broken up in September 2007 by CF Booths, Rotherham. This derelict station is Pant in South Wales on 7th July 1980. GWR '5700' Class 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 7754 seen out of use at Mountain Ash Colliery. Built by North British Locomtive, Glasgow, it entered GWR service at Reading depot in December 1930. It's last depot was Wellington, from where it was withdrawn in January 1959 before passing into industrial use with the National Coal Board. Another view of 7754 at Mountain Ash on 7th July 1980. This loco is now preserved and can be seen at the Llangollen Railway. Dawlish Warren on 28th August 1980 - unrefurbished Class 50 no 50026 'Indomitable' is waiting for the road to run light engine westwards, whilst 47056 hurries eastwards past the camping coaches. 47056 later became 47654 as a twin tank ETH conversion in 1986. Subsequently numbered 47809 and 47783, it was withdrawn by EWS in June 2002. Finally it was broken up by Ron Hull's, Rotherham in September 2007. 50026 is now preserved and nearing the completion of its restoration. 'Flying Banana' HST 43036 passing Dawlish Warren on 28th August 1980. 45058 alongside the famed Dawlish Sea Wall. It was withdrawn from Tinsley in September 1987 and lingered around for several years before being scrapped at MC Metals, Glasgow, in March 1994. Another unrefurbished Class 50, no 50036 'Victorious' heads for the West at Dawlish Warren, 28th August 1980. Withdrawn from Laira in April 1991, it was scrapped in July 1992 at Booth's. The shell of 46012 awaits breaking up at Swindon Works on 5th October 1980. The former D149 had been withdrawn just 3 months previously from Laira and final disposal was rapid, being completed in the month this picture was taken. 46012 had a fairly short career of around 18 years. Another July 1980 condemnation was Cricklewood's Class 25/2 no 25204. Last overhauled at Derby in May 1974, 25204 was the 36th Class 25 to be removed from traffic. Again, cutting was completed at Swindon Works in October 1980 (seen here on the 5th). Swindon Works, 5th October 1980 and 31136 is another loco about to be scrapped. It was one of the first Class 31/1s to be withdrawn, in August 1980 from Bristol Bath Road depot. Disposal was completed in November 1980. Cab detail of 31136. Undergoing it's last works overhaul is 08438 inside Swindon on 5th October 1980. It was withdrawn in March 1986 from March depot, but disposal did not come until October 1992 when it became yet another loco scrapped at Booth's. These four lived to see another day. 46025-28 were all stored alongside the mainline opposite Swindon Works. They were later reinstated for further use. Three of them then survived to the very end of the class - as 46025-7 were withdrawn from Gateshead in November 1984 along with all surviving classmates. 46028 made it as far as May 1984. (l-r 46025/8/6/7) Gloucester Horton Road and gleaming 08849 rests at its home shed on 19th October 1980 along with grubby 08796. A Class 120 DMU is on the left, the split-box Class 45 is unidentified, whilst the 37s are 37158 and 37258. Another of Gloucester's 08s at the time was 08364, seen alongside 47026 which is missing a buffer. 19th October 1980. 08364 was later withdrawn from Landore in January 1983 and broken up in October the same year at Swindon. 47026 later became 47597 then 47741 and was withdrawn from traffic by EWS is 2003. It was cut up by EMR at Kingsbury in May 2008. 31422 pokes its nose out of Horton Road's shed - a small remainder of the once huge GWR depot. Stopped from traffic at Bescot in December 1996, 31422 still remains in store at Tyseley. Wolverton on 31st October 1980 and 85016 heads a Freightliner service. This loco later became 85105, one of 14 85/1s that were renumbered and restricted to 75mph. It was one of the final six stood down by Railfreight Distribution in July 1991, outlived by just a handful retained for ECS work.

Bristol based Class 101 DMU B801 at Haresfield on 27th May 1978. Class 46 no 46042 rushes past Haresfield on 27th May 1978. This locomotive survived another 2 1/2 years in traffic, being withdrawn in December 1980 from Gateshead depot - one of 9 46s withdrawn in that month. It was cut up at Swindon Works in December 1982. A Class 50 in almost as-built condition, before naming or refurbishment. 50008 was seen at Haresfield on 27th May 1978 and was later named 'Thunderer'. One of the last survivors in traffic, it was withdrawn in June 1992 from Laira and is now preserved. HST 253010 at Swindon on 13th August 1978. At this early stage in their careers the 'Flying Bananas' were unloved by enthusiasts, but were revolutionising travel on the Great Western mainline. They still dominate the scene 30 years later. A Deltic at St Neots on 25th August 1978, it is 55012. 'Crepello' was the sixth of the class to be condemned from Finsbury Park in May 1981 and was swiftly cut up at Doncaster works in September of that year. This loco was running again by 1990 and made a return to the mainline in 2000. Stopped for overhaul in 2005 it is now back on the mainline again since May 2008. Hymek D7018 was one of the very first preserved diesels, having been withdrawn in March 1975 from Old Oak Common as one of the last Hymeks in traffic. Seen at Didcot on 14th April 1979. The bunkers of 6106/4144/5572 in front of Hall Class 4942 'Maindy hall'. In 2008 this loco is forming the basis of the project to build a Saint Class engine. Swindon Works Open Day on 19th May 1979 and Collett King 6000 'King George V' is in steam. 'The Bristolian' headboard on 6000 'King George V' Warship 818 'Glory' and a Hymek at Swindon on 19th May 1979. Sadly, 'Glory' was not destined for preservation despite outlasting most of its classmates by many years. Withdrawn from Newton Abbot depot in November 1972, it was cut up 13 years later at Swindon works, just after it had been announced that the works would close. Just the frames, two wheelsets, and cab of 08158 remain on 19th May 1979. It had been withdrawn just two months earlier from Selhurst depot, so disposal was clearly fast. Ten years earlier the works would have been full of diesel hydraulics, but by 19th May 1979 overhaul of Class 08s was the staple work of BREL Swindon. Another view inside Swindon works, 08s under repair where less than 20 years earlier GWR 4-6-0s would have still been undergoing overhaul at their birthplace. Class 45 'Peak' no 45023 has something of an ex-works look about it at Haresfield on 14th July 1979. It survived in traffic until September 1984 when it was withdrawn from Toton depot. In common with many of its classmates it met its end in the Leicester scrapyard of Vic Berry, in October 1986. 46038 heads north at Haresfield on 14th July 1979. Withdrawn in March 1982 from Gateshead, 46038 met its maker at Swindon Works, in November 1985. Unrefurbished Class 50 no 50040 'Leviathan' powers through Haresfield. Withdrawn from Laira's DCWA pool in November 1989, 50040 was officially preserved, but has not turned a wheel in preservation and currently languishes in a sorry state at Coventry. 47196 with 1970s 'Domino' headcodes and Mk1 coaches, passing Haresfield on 14 July 1979. Withdrawn from Sheffield's Tinsley depot in February 1994, it had been cut up by the following month by Cooper's Metals. ETH Class 31, no 31424 seen at Severn Tunnel Junction on 2nd November 1979. Later numbered 31524, it was condemned from Bescot shed in May 1996, being cut up a little over 10 years later by Ron Hull Jr, Rotherham. A Paddington-bound HST passing Severn Tunnel Junction's stabling point, 2 November 1979 BR Standard 73096, Barry Yard, 2nd November 1979 6023 'King Edward II' at Barry, 2nd November 1979. A couple of light engine movements were the highlight of the 45 mins or so I spent overlooking the WCML and M6 on 3rd June. The next day included a brief visit to Carnforth, including seeing the famous clock and refreshment room. A few of WCRC's stored locomotives were viewed from a public footpath. ]]> Sun Jun 15 2008 Long Marston Open Day 7th June 2008 http://rjprail.fotopic.net/c1524061.html Long Marston opened its gates on 7th July 2008 to allow viewing of the huge amount of locomotives and rolling stock stored there. Former Kings of the WCML, the class 87 locomotives dominate, indeed the event was titled 'Farewell to the 87s' - as most of the class are due to be moved abroad to work in Bulgaria alongside the few that are already there. Recently preserved 87002 'Royal Sovereign', owned by the AC Locomotive Group, made its public debut - looking absolutely stunning. Saturday 7 June 2008: Long Marston opened its gates on 7th July 2008 to allow viewing of the huge amount of locomotives and rolling stock stored there. Former Kings of the WCML, the class 87 locomotives dominate, indeed the event was titled 'Farewell to the 87s' - as most of the class are due to be moved abroad to work in Bulgaria alongside the few that are already there. Recently preserved 87002 'Royal Sovereign', owned by the AC Locomotive Group, made its public debut - looking absolutely stunning. Other sights included Class 86 AC electrics and decaying class 08, 20, 37 and 56 diesel locomotives.

51352 leads a DMU on shuttles round the site. 87027 formerly named 'Wolf of Badenoch' was withdrawn in August 2004. Previously, it was reprieved and repaired after a serious accident at Winsford in June 1999. 87009 leads this line up of seventeen Class 87s. The outline of the Virgin branding can still be seen on 87009. Named 'City of Birmingham' from 1977-2003, it was withdrawn from Willesden in April 2004. 47746 in store at Long Marston. One of the last two of the class in traffic, 87028 'Lord President' was withdrawn in December 2007, having latterly operated from Wembley depot for GBRf. 87022 'Cock o'the North' was the other class member to survive until the end of 2007. It also carried the name 'Lew Adams - the Black Prince' from 1998 to 2004. Shove-duff 47701 'Waverley' in Fragonset colours. 87020 and 87034 stand silently. One of the first to be stood down from traffic in December 2003, 87034 was named 'William Shakespeare'. Recently preserved by the AC Locomotive Group, 87002 'Royal Sovereign' looks superb. 87020 'North Briton' was another withdrawn from Willesden in December 2003. 87025 carried the name 'Borderer' from 1978-1982, before it was renamed with the less imaginitive name 'County of Cheshire'. It was stopped from traffic in December 2004. March 2005 withdrawal victim 87003 'Patriot'. 87002 had been withdrawn in December 2006 before being saved by preservation. The original name has been restored in place of the 'The AC Locomotive Group' plates carried in recent years. The ACLG also owns the immaculate NSE liveried 86401. 87002 and 87017. My personal favourite class 87 - 87017 'Iron Duke'. This loco was again amongst the first major batch of four withdrawals in December 2003, although 87005 had been condemned in September of that year and 87101 back in 1999. The ACLG's 86401 and 87002 frame 87017. 87002 in front of 87025. With original jumper cables and livery restored, 87002 presents a fine sight. 86401 and 87006. South West Trains liveried 73201. 87011 carried 'The Black Prince' nameplates for 20 years from 1978 before being renamed 'City of Wolverhampton'. This loco was again stood down from traffic in December 2003. Iron Duke again..... Another view of the ACLG's fine handiwork. Withdrawn from Wembley in December 2006, 87006 was named 'City of Glasgow' for most of it's career, but also carried the names 'Glasgow Garden Festival' for one year and 'George Reynolds' for 7 years. 87013 'John O'Gaunt' spent its last days with GBRf before withdrawal in August 2005. 87013/006/011/017 87004 'Britannia' lasted in service with Virgin long enough to be reallocated from Willesden to Wembley, it was withdrawn in June 2005. 87021 'Robert the Bruce' was stopped in January 2005 from Willesden depot. 'Black Douglas' - 87030 was a March 2005 withdrawal. Another withdrawn in March 2005 was 87033 'Thane of Fife'. 87014 and 87033. Another view of 'Robert the Bruce'. 'Knight of the Thistle' was the name that graced 87014 - it was transferred to GBRf before being stood down in August 2005. 86235, 86229 and 87014. 87023 was 'Highland Chieftain' from 1978-1984, later being named 'Velocity' and finally 'Polmadie'. GBRf's 66722 was on display at Long Marston. 86229 and 87014. A line up reminiscent of Willesden depot, class 86s await their fate at Long Marston. Another view of 87023, which was withdrawn in January 2005. 87032 'Kenilworth' was taken out of active service in October 2004. More Anglia 'Cans'. 87029 'Earl Marischal', withdrawn in October 2004. 08736 was withdrawn from British Rail service from Motherwell depot way back in September 1987. Unidentified 08 (08345?) in Russell's livery. Another September 1987 withdrawal from Motherwell - 08728. DRS owned 20902 has not run since March 2003. 87010 'King Arthur', one of the last to be stood down by Virgin in June 2005.

In fact, the afternoon proved quiet but traffic picked up significantly in the evening onwards. Locos pausing for crew changes enabled me to have my first try at night photography. This locomotive was a celebrity engine in 1977 as 47164, being adorned with painted Union Jack flags by Stratford depot to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It was later numbered 47571 and then 47822. 57305, 66508, 57301. Freightliner's 66508 is heading for Carlisle yard to pick up its train. Ageing class 86/6s 86605+86628 double-head a southbound Freightliner service DRS 20301 'Max Joule' and 20305 run light engine towards the station. 158849 in Northern Rail livery. Recently restored to traffic is 57012 in DRS livery. 57012 was the last of a batch of 12 57s converted from class 47s for Freightliner. It re-entered traffic in April 2000, having previously been 47204. 66415 on a DRS intermodal service. Northern Rail's 142050. There was a fair crowd of people waiting to board 153332 66555 has just come off the Hexham trans-Pennine line, on 4S15 10:46 Drax Power Station-Killoch empties. 92007 with EWS 'Enterprise' service 6X12 17:20 Carlisle Yard-Eastleigh 66563 was believed to be on 4S68 14:07 Drax-Killoch, this time routed via the S&C Advertising vinyls on 158790. Northern Rail's 158790. Freightliner's 66513 and Strathclyde PTE liveried 156494. 66513 at the head of a southbound loaded coal train. Mail unit 325011 heading South. As the sun sets, a Pendolino stops at platform 1 with a northbound service. 158872 still carries 'Alphaline' colours from its days with the Arriva Wales and West TOC. EWS 66162, heading a working of empty MGR coal wagons. These HAA wagons are now in the minority, having once been used in their thousands for coal trains. 66405 heads through the station with the early-running 4M48 18:59 Grangemouth-Daventry Another shot of Malcolm liveried 66405 on the 'Tesco Express'.... ...a few minutes later the DRS intermodal service operated on behalf of Malcolm was powered by 66423. 86607 + 86613 double-head 4L81 19:41 Coatbridge-Tilbury 86607 + 86613 double-head 4L81 19:41 Coatbridge-Tilbury 92037 leads 6S73 16:12 Bescot Yard - Mosssend, with 57301 on the right. Mail unit 325013 brings up the rear of this northbound service, operated by GBRf. EWS 66196 with 6E92 15:00 Greenburn-Drax Power Station. A Pendolino in platform 3 at Carlisle 60062 was hauling empty steel carriers on a service diverted from the ECML. Another EWS Enterprise service, 6M66 18:20 Mossend-Wembley, hauled by 92019. 66201 and 92009 both pause at Carlisle Citadel with southbound freights. 92009 was hauling 4M67 17:40 Grangemouth-Trafford Park intermodal. 66201 with loaded MGR wagons forming 6M18 17:41 New Cumnock - Earles sidings Freightliner's 66544 was hauling an unidentified southbound coal train.

Locations range around the Western Region, although Tiverton Junction and Severn Tunnel Junction are both prominent. A last look at Gloucester Eastgate station is also included. A lost part of the British landscape is the small colliery, and the photos of Cwm Colliery illustrate this once common scene. Motive power includes Class 35 'Hymeks' and Class 52 'Westerns' as well as the longer lasting 47s/50s etc. Unfortunately, most of the locos are not identified and precise date/location information may be lacking. Hopefully an enjoyable stroll down memory lane anyway. Double-headed Class 35 'Hymeks' haul a rake of empty coal wagons past Badgeworth Lane, Cheltenham on 20th March 1972. Gloucester Eastgate was the Midland Railway station in the city. Its last year of operation was 1975, by which time it was much reduced in importance. The bridge linking it to the GWR's Central station can be seen in the far right of this 1975 shot. By this time, both stations were simply known as 'Gloucester', and here we see platforms 2 and 3 in the former Eastgate station. Eastgate was finally closed on the 1st December 1975. All trace of the station was eventually obliterated, and it's site is now occupied by a road and an Asda superstore (opened in the early 1980s). This unidentified BR blue Western was pictured speeding through Tiverton Junction in May 1975. Another Western heads a rake of Mk2s through Tiverton Junction in May 1975. Surrounded by semaphores, another Western hauls a rake of Mk 1s through Tiverton Junction, May 1975. The Westerns were being replaced on top link work by EE Type 4 class 50s. The sharply focused BR logo contrasts with the blurred 'InterCity' logo on the air-conditioned Mk2 coach, May 1975. The 50s were unnamed, unrefurbished and very unpopular at this time as they ousted the popular Westerns. May 1975, Tiverton Junction. Another unidentified Western rushes through Tiverton Junction, May 1975. Single car DMU L123 in all-over blue livery departs Heyford with an Oxford-bound service. Swindon and a Didcot-bound MGR train passes, hauled by a class 47. Enthusiasts young and old chat to the driver as this original-spec class 50 waits at Swindon. A class 47 'Brush 4' passes Swindon heading an express bound for Wales. A Western seen through the clutter of BRUTE trolleys at Swindon. A class 37 near Cwm Colliery, with a class 9 unfitted freight consisting of coal wagons. Possibly 37177 or 37277. Cwm Colliery, like many Welsh mines, had its own shunters and sidings. This scene seems to come from a period much older than 30 years ago. A 37 passes Cwm Colliery, a once everyday industrial scene of winding gear, trains and coal. An atmospheric study of Cwm Colliery's steam shunter. With the NCB offices in the background, Cwm Colliery's shunter busies itself shunting the yard. GWR Castle Class 5080 'Defiant' in the sidings near Gloucester station, on its way to preservation and restoration at Tyseley, 1974. A view of Gloucester's loop line, looking towards Cheltenham. Unfitted freights abound in this view of Gloucester loop yard, looking in the Bristol/Swindon direction. A class 47 heads a special near Heyford. A class 52 Western seen near Heyford. This steam special seen near Heyford was headed by 7808 'Cookham Manor' and 6998 'Burton Agnes Hall'. Panned shot of GWR Manor 4-6-0 7808 'Cookham Manor' The period vehicles add to this shot of 'Cookham Manor' leading Hall 6998 'Burton Agnes Hall'. English Electric Class 40, no 40170 seen at Ardley with a rake of bogie oil tanks. Severn Tunnel Junction and a Western trundles through with a freight. Two-tone green liveried D1935 heads past Severn Tunnel Junction on an eastbound express. Delivered new to 82A (Bristol Bath Road) in March 1966, this loco moved to 86A (Cardiff Canton) in September 1972 and would have been allocated to one of those sheds when this photo was taken. Renumbered under TOPS to 47257 in June 1974, it later became 47650 in March 1986 and then 47805 in August 1989. Bought by Riviera Trains in January 2005 it is currently still in traffic and named 'Talisman', having previously carried the names 'Bristol Bath Road' and 'Pride of Toton'. A mixed line up at Barry scrapyard Bullied West Country 'light pacific' 3407x silently rusting in the Barry graveyard. The horse seems unmoved by the fate of the two ex-GWR engines behind it. Collett King 6023 'King Edward II' looks like its career is over, but it was saved for preservation in 1984 and restoration continues to this day. Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48151 looks almost good enough to fire up and run. This loco was preserved and is now operated on the mainline by the West Coast Railway Company. The rather abandoned looking Quakers Yard station and all-over blue DMU C331 pauses. Back to Severn Tunnel Junction and a class 47 passes through. The lighting gantries in the background testify to the extent of the yards. 08654 shunts a load of brand new Ford cars at STJ. Withdrawn in November 1991 from Cardiff Canton, 08654 was disposed of at Booth's scrapyard, Rotherham in May 1994. Class 52 Western D1073 'Western Bulwark' light engine at Severn Tunnel Junction. Withdrawn in August 1974 from Plymouth's Laira depot, D1073 was disposed of at Swindon Works by the following July. The superb scene at Severn Tunnel Junction as a class 52 Western heads a Paddington-bound express past the busy yards. Also in view are a class 31, class 45/6 'Peak' and class 47. 47089 'Amazon' trundling past the offices at STJ. A lifelong Western Region engine, it was delivered new in April 1965 to Cardiff Canton, before spells at Bristol Bath Road and Old Oak Common. It was a Bath Road engine again by February 1987 when it ran away with 7A22 14:32 Peak Forest-Bletchley stone train and derailed at Chinley North Junction. It was hit by 31440 and badly damaged, eventually being withdrawn in June 1987. Also in the shot is class 25 no.25284, which was withdrawn in January 1985 from Crewe depot. Taken near Heyford on 4th October 1971 was this panned shot of Brush Type 4 1728. It was running light engine ahead of the mainline 'Return to Steam' special, hauled by 6000 'King George V'. Delivered new to 86A (Cardiff Canton) in April 1964, this loco subsequently became 47136 then 47621 'Royal County of Berkshire'. Again renumbered to 47839 it carried the names ' RAF Valley' and 'Pride of Saltley' before being bought by Riviera Trains in February 2003. Now named 'Pegasus', it is still operated by RT. Near Badgeworth Lane, Cheltenham, an unidentified class 45 'Peak'.

Also photographed 47769 stabled at Gloucester. Highlight of the four freights seen at Atherstone was Jarvis' 56303. Was shocked to see the state of Rugby railway station, it seems the never-ending rebuilding continues. Several tracks have been removed, leaving just four through lines in current operation. As ever, the variety did not disappoint with plenty of freight activity in evidence. The day was cut short when an OHL failure at Milton Keynes meant that the WCML was closed, the last Pendolino we saw was terminated at Rugby. 25 years ago an OHL failure would have meant photographer's paradise as a motley selection of diesels would have been pressed into action on 'drags' - sadly not the case these days. 47769 was failed due to high water temperatures and stabled at Gloucester, having limped from Ashchurch. 47769 'Resolve' is owned by Riviera Trains, but still carries Virgin colours from its days as VXC engine. Freightliner's 66502 passes Atherstone on 4O86 07:25 Crewe-Thamesport(Grain) Pendolino at Atherstone. Atherstone's station building, now seemingly in use as a vet's surgery. Jarvis Fastline's 56303 rumbles towards Atherstone. 4M60, the 03:57 Thamesport (Grain) to Trafford Park is not exactly a taxing load for 56303. 56303 was formerly numbered 56125 before re-activation for use by Jarvis Fastline. A Pendolino leans to the curve at Atherstone. 90047 approaching Atherstone on 4M45, the 03:23 Felixstowe-Ditton Freightliner. Another shot of 90047 on 4M45. Freightliner's 90047 still carries the triple-grey livery it was built in, albeit now branded with its operator's logos. 90049 leads 4L97 05:09 Trafford Park-Felixstowe Freightliner service through Atherstone. A Pendolino passes 4L97 Rugby's north end bay platforms are no more. A lookout watches the passing Northbound Pendolino. A Euston-bound Pendolino picks its way through the jungle of catenary towards Rugby. Two Pendolinos passing. Freightliner's 66535 approaching Rugby. 66535 was heading 4L93, the 10:08 Lawley Street - Felixstowe 'liner. A closer look at 66535's cab shows plenty of rust around the window frames. Next up was FL's 66504 at the head of 4O35, the 09:40 Crewe Basford Hall - Southampton 'liner. The telephoto effect emphasises the steepness of the slope as 92009 nears Rugby. EWS owned 92009 carries proper cast 'Elgar' nameplates, unlike most of its classmates. 92009 was powering EWS' 6G62 Enterprise service from Daventry - Bescot. A Colas Rail permanent way job. 60040 thunders through at the head of an unidentified working including Cemex wagons. EWS 66112 is hauling empty Cargowagons as the 6A51 11:40 Coventry Prologis - Wembley Another 66 cab close up shows that 66112 is also showing signs of age. DRS leased 66414 heads North on 4S44, the 12:12 Daventry-Coatbridge intermodal. Rugby now has searchlight style signals (a single lens can display multiple aspects). Double headed 66s pass through platform 1 at Rugby - 66541+66538 66541 and 66538 are operating 4M94 the 07:30 Felixstowe-Lawley Street Record shot of 66541 and 66538 A non-stopping 390030 passes a Pendolino stopped at Rugby. Freightliner's 90016 on 4L75 Crewe BH - Felixstowe passes one of the many working parties. 60079 'Foinaven' on 6A15 Bescot - Forders VQ, Still in as-built triple grey, 60079 may be filthy but the bodywork is still in good nick. Can the same be said for the mechanicals? London Midland is the new franchisee taking over the WCML services formerly operated by Silverlink/Central. 350124 wears the new livery. Livery detail on 350124. 66578 was working an unidentified Northbound intermodal. The 'feather' is on and 66578 proceeds under amber. 92002 was on 4H24 11:31 Wembley - Trafford Park intermodal. Cab end of 390052 92037 slows whilst a crew member waits. Boarding 92037. This was possibly an early running 4H17 Wembley - Trafford Park that 92037 was hauling. The 00:15 6O60 Mossend-Dollands Moor 'silver bullets' behind 92001, one of only two 92s in EWS livery and the first time either had worked this service. Malcolm liveried 66405 was operating 4Z34 05:00 Coatbridge - Daventry Passing Pendos - 390047 on the right.

The station was closed due to work on the permanent way, and a bustitution service was in place. Sadly, 47761 was almost entirely obscured by a Sprinter, but Cotswold Advenza's ex-Freightliner class 57 no 57005 was also present - looking in need of the lick of Advenza paint which it is due to receive very shortly. Finally, a number of shots around Cologne and at Cologne Hauptbahnhof. Sadly the proper winter weather stayed away so the shots are in the gloom rather than in the snow! Hoped to capture the semaphores in the early winter sun, but alas there was none, and it was early winter rain instead! Even on a Saturday, Barnetby sees a steady flow of freight - more than most locations get on a week day. EWS 60s and 66s along with Freightliner 66s provide the majority of the traction. The details of the freight workings are added to give a bit of detail, but in some cases I cannot be sure which working was which, so an educated best-guess was made. Sunday 11 November 2007: Another visit to Barnetby, this time starting early on a Saturday morning. The headlight of 153383 reflects off the platform puddles. A pair of 153s, led by 153330, both in Northern Spirit blue. 66016 at the head of 6C73, the early running 07:34 Immingham-Scunthorpe. The gentle glow of the lights on the semaphores on a gloomy morning. Looking towards Immingham, the signalbox lights offer some warmth on wet day. 66048 was first to penetrate the murk at about 0720, on an unidentified ex-Immingham working. 185110 on a Manchester Airport-Cleethorpes service. 66075 with 4R11, 0500 Cottam Power Station - Immingham empties. 66014 with empty EWS coal hoppers on 4C71, the 0730 Scunthorpe-Immingham. 60092 was on the Iron ore circuit, here returning empties to Immingham with 6K21 the 0821 ex-Santon. Also on the ore circuit was 60022, with loaded hoppers bound for Santon on 6T22, timed to leave Immingham at 0852. The glow of a semaphore distant. 66614 headed what was apparently 6R33 Immingham-Ferrybridge Power Station. As the Freightliner Heavy Haul service waits, 60044 arrives from the Lincoln line. Sole Mainline Blue liveried 60044 with 6E46, the 0435 Kingsbury-Lindsey. 60044's exhausts heat the damp air. 66614 has been given the road and departs towards Scunthorpe. Pacer 142061 seems lost amongst the Victorian-era infrastructure. Now with empty tipplers, 60022 returns from Santon as 6K22. 60022 was timed to leave Santon at 09:35 on 6K22. Just another day and another set of ore empties at Barnetby East (60022 again). 60076 on what was possibly 6D31 Lindsey-West Burton via Brigg. Another EWS shed, 66161 with empty hoppers, probably 4C72 0931 Scunthorpe-Immingham. It's 10:30, but the signs offer little other help to the passengers as 185145 arrives on a Cleethorpes service. Triple-grey 60092 bound for Santon again on 6T23, 1006 ex-Immingham. 60092 rounds the box. A forest of sempahores and a rake of battered tipplers behind Tug 092. 66014 has loaded up at Immingham and is heading back to Scunthorpe on the 10:39 booked departure 6C75 66075 also returns from Immingham with loaded hoppers, 6B65 10:45 Immingham-West Burton Power Station? Shed 75 again. It's raining again as 153383 trundles away. 66016 powers up the incline with 4C73, the 1047 Scunthorpe-Immingham 60021 opens up as it arrives from the Doncaster direction. 60021 was heading 6D65, the 0950 Doncaster-Immingham 'Enterprise' service. Front-end study of Freightliner's 66582, which was hauling 4R14 0925 Eggborough Power Station - Immingham. 66582 and its empty hoppers. The ore circuit never stops, 60092 for the third time, this working is booked as 6K23 1122 Santon-Immingham. Northern Spirit liveried Pacer 142061. Rubbish excuse for a train. More imported coal, this time in box wagons - 66219 on 6M86, the 1137 Immingham-Washwood Heath. 66219, 185145 and 66210. 66210 is looking a touch claggy on another EWS Enterprise service, this one being 6D70, 1050 Doncaster-Immingham.

The intention at Doncaster was to get some shots of the GNER liveried HSTs and IC225s (Class 91s). The views from the car park overlooking the station and works were great, although we were swiftly, but politely, asked not to photograph there by a friendly security guard - apparently due to the nearby prison being visible. A mixed bag of units, 91s, HSTs, 66s, 67s and a 60 were seen at the station. EWS 60075 heads off to collect more wagons, it was later seen passing in the other direction. 185137 operated by First Trans Pennine Express. It's 66618 again - this time departing. Northern Rail's 158787 arrives at Doncaster on a Sheffield-bound service. Leeds/Yorkshire Forward logos on 158787. Virgin Voyager 220008. A Voyager bakes in the sun as 158787 leaves. 158761 makes a smokey exit, bound for Hull. Nodding Donkey 142090 with a Lincoln service. GNER's Mk4 DVT 82217 is 'Off to the Races' GNER's presumably soon to be obsolete logo. Some carriages carry a cast version, but I photographed a sticker - reason unknown! 91132 'City of Durham' at the North end of a southbound service. This was formerly 91023, the loco involved (and undamaged) in both Hatfield and Great Heck crashes. Another view of 91132 and it's Mk4 set. The 91s do not go anywhere near Cannes, so 91118 is named 'Bradford Film Festival'. One of Northern Rail's small fleet of class 321s - 321902. Cab view of 321902 An HST speeds South on the through line, whilst 158754 takes the sun. 158754 still wears North West Trains livery, one of the early privatisation colour-schemes. 43318 'City of Kingston-upon-Hull' stands at..... 91121 ' Archbishop Thomas Cranmer' 91121 passing 185127. The 'EM' on the latter means that it has had Environmental Modifications completed. Open Access operater Hull Trains has 3 of these class 222s in service. HT's 222 accelerates away. 08594 has probably seen happier times, this coat of BR Blue may well be 20+ years old now. Another Hull Trains Class 222 A northbound HST 185107 waits whilst the HST passes through. 185107 exits Doncaster. An unidentified 91 heading North. 142017 bound for Lincoln. This was one of the 142s originally based at Laira for Devon & Cornwall services in 1986. The 'Skippers' were sent packing within a couple of years, but rumours suggest they might be going back. Freightliner's 66559 and 66583 run through light engine. EWS 67019 Ordered for the now lost Royal Mail services, the 67s are now used on a variety of other work. 67019 trundles off light engine. 43290 carries a Leeds to London advert and an 'MTU - Fascination of Power' cast nameplate. A Mk4 DVT at the head of a southbound service. Another unidentified 91 pushes its train southwards. The sun reflects off the side of these GNER Mk4s with their cast crests. A non-stop southbound HST speeds past a sister set on a northbound stopper. Plenty of smoke as this HST accelerates hard. Pacer 144004.

It has been vinyl wrapped with Monkey: Journey to the West images - each carriage having its own design. The Monkey: Journey to the West opera opened the Festival on the day these photos were taken (28 June). Blur lead singer Damon Albarn and Chen Shi-Zheng are behind the Monkey 'circus-opera', based on the Chinese Monkey legend. Jamie Hewlett (the artist behind Gorillaz and Tank Girl), worked with graffiti artist Chu on the artwork for this project. The DRS 37s on a Serco test train and the GBRf stock move were both pleasant surprises. Seeing 3 of Freightliner's latest batch of 66s was good too - 66588-590 were all only delivered in April. This was also the day when it was announced that EWS had been bought by DB - could the EWS livery be in line for an update? This is the first set of photos from that day, a second set will follow later in order to keep the collections a reasonable size. A huge bonus was the appearance of 40145 (together with 33029) with stock from a special train running for the Lincoln Christmas Market. Great to see a 'whistler' at Barnetby, and sincere thanks to the guy that told me it was due and saved me from missing out on seeing it. EWS liveried 60026 at the head of 6M96, the 0533 Margam-Corby carrying steel coil. Another shot of 60026 on 6M96. Former Midland Mainline 170/1 170114 on a Central Trains service. 60029 'Clitheroe Castle' in charge of 6V54, the 0530 Round Oak-Llanwern conveying empty covered steel wagons. Pacer 143619. EWS 66037 on 6C71 Round Oak - Portbury, empty coal hoppers. Unidentified HST power car (43165?) leads an Eastbound service. 6B13, the 0348 Robeston-Westerleigh was hauled by 60046. 60046 on 6B13. The sun reflects off 60046 and its rake of loaded bogie oil tanks. Another MTU engined HST power car - 43097 - leads a Paddington-bound service. The gloom has descended again as a 158 approaches STJ. Appalling conditions greeted 57004 on 4O51 1002 Cardiff Wentloog-Southampton Freightliner. One of only 3 shots I have of a 57, the others are even worse! As an HST descends into the Severn Tunnel, 60015 approaches on 6V35, which left Lackenby at 00:50 and is finally nearing its destination - Llanwern. 60015 on 6V35 An HST powers up out of the Tunnel as a 158 descends. A westbound First Great Western HST is about to pass an Eastbound service. The M4 motorway is the backdrop as 66246 leads 6F27, the 1150 East Usk - Portbury coal empties. Now with loaded coal hoppers, 66037 returns on 6B85 the 12:48 Portbury to Aberthaw Power Station. 66037 pauses, about to set down crew members at STJ. 66037 heads off West. 60046 heads back West light engine. Yet another MTU engined HST pierces the murk at STJ. A traditional loaded MGR rake is hauled by 66122 as the consist of 7C79 1013 Parc Slip to Westbury Cement Works. 66122 and its MGRs roll towards the tunnel. 66231 heads through STJ light engine. A noisy, grotty shot, but Mainline Blue is a rare sight, so here is 60044 on 6M41 Margam-Round Oak; yet more steel.

A couple of unexpected bonuses were seen in the shape of Mainline Blue 60078 and pioneer EWS 66 no.66001. It's still somewhat sad to reflect on STJ in its current emasculated form, but such is progress; standing on the bridge overlooking the station brought back many memories of trips there in the early 1980s, watching hump shunting and the constant flow of freights in and out of the various yards. In January 2007, 08936 has now been on site for some time, keeping 47033 company. 45112 has been stabled in the head shunt opposite the depot for a few days now. Perhaps most unlikely at the time would be the thought that last built 56135, which was only a couple of years old then, would be long withdrawn and cut-up by 2005.
