1978-9 Swindon Works Open Day plus Peaks in their prime
22nd June 2008
<-- Index | Showing 1-43 of 43 pictures | Index -->
Another load of scanned slides - all taken by my father David.

The shots from 1978 include NCB steam hard at work at Mountain Ash colliery, Deltic 'Crepello' and some classic blue type fours at Haresfield near Gloucester.

1979 sees more shots at Haresfield as well as a visit to BREL's Swindon Works for an Open Day. King George V was in steam. Several photos of steam locomotives, both stored and unrestored, on the Severn Valley Railway and at the Didcot Railway Centre. Preservation hopefuls are also seen awaiting salvation at Barry scrapyard.

Warship 818 'Glory' and a Hymek at Swindon on 19th May 1979. Sadly, 'Glory' was not destined for preservation despite outlasting most of its classmates by many years. Withdrawn from Newton Abbot depot in November 1972, it was cut up 13 years later at Swindon works, just after it had been announced that the works would close.
